WAQA City and Country Quilters at Mount Magnet
Roberta Chantler and Pat Forster from Perth, and Lana Lefroy from Sandstone took 18 ROCK-themed art quilts and numerous small quilts and quilt-related items to the Mount Magnet Astro Rocks Fest this past weekend.
We were allocated space in Mount Magnet Hall opposite the amazing Genestreams Songlines Mural & Artwork which you can read about at Astro Rocks Festival Artist Residency. Creating the Mount Magnet Genestreams Songlines Mural | SciArt
A continuously running Powerpoint of spectacular Astro photos, and an inspiring display of stick and moulded paper sculptures were also in the hall, so people who attended the talks in the hall certainly were in for a visual treat. The talks were by experts but were aimed at the general public so we learnt a lot about ROCKS – different types, where they occur, flora and fauna on them, relevance of ancient Pilbara rocks to the Mars mission.
As well there were mine-site, quarry and Aboriginal heritage tours, and Mt Magnet races on Saturday afternoon — all great for our menfolk while we attended our display. Conversations with locals and tourists made our weekend, as well as their generosity in purchasing our offerings. A commission was secured and offers of future projects made to us—we shall see! It was all a lot of effort and we thank the other contributors of ROCK quilts who helped make the exhibit happen: Meg Cowey, Elizabeth Humphreys, Robyn Clout, Julie McAllister, Val York (Busselton), Jan Fisher (Esperance), and Cathy Jensen (Goomaling).
