Retreat at Lake Karrinyup Country Club

Taking my sewing machine out of the car in the Lake Karrinyup Country Club (LKCC) carpark drew some curious looks from the golfers heading to the greens. The 2 day no sleep retreat last month was held at LKCC which was a first for the club as well as for WAQA. As with many events recently, COVID-19 affected LKCC staff and so the club only had a skeleton crew working on the weekend, which created some issues particularly with the meals on the first day. At least the retreat was not cancelled.

There was plenty of room for the 25 quilters attending the retreat and it did not take long before the tables were covered with machines, mats, fabric and other quilting stuff. Space was not an issue and it was quite a lovely room, but the lighting could have been better especially whenever the clouds swept over and definitely once the sun went down.

With only two days for quilting, there was a sense of urgency for some quilters (I was one of them) and soon the chatter was muffled by the humming of machines. As with all retreats, some quilters had specific goals in regards to the work they wanted to achieve whilst others were simply interested in making progress on a particular project.

I really enjoyed walking around and checking out what others were working on (the need to take photos my excuse for being nosy). It was just amazing to see the variety of projects that people brought with them. As always I’m very appreciative of the helpfulness of other quilters, particularly when it takes them away from their own project.

Carolina from SewMondo came along and set up a wonderful display of fabric. It was nice to take a break from sewing to check out the colours and find something to add to the stash back home.

As with other WAQA Retreats I’ve attended Madeleine provided a craft activity for those interested in making something new. Its amazing what you can do with a bottle top. There were a few pincushions made on the day, but I only managed to get a photo of the ones made by Liz and Deb.

We had a show and tell immediately following lunch on the final day, which was an opportunity to see what everyone had been working on. It was also nice to see that some quilters took time to complete their strata for handing in at the June Sewing Day and Night as part of the Cancer Fundraising Event. If you want to see pictures of the work of the retreat members check out the LKCC Retreat Slide Show.

Madeleine, the WAQA Retreats Convenor put in a lot of work behind the scenes in organising the retreat, and then on both days at the retreat itself, plus working to resolve the issues as they arose. Your efforts Madeleine are greatly appreciated!
