Primarily Patchwork Group on International Women’s Day

What would be a great way for a quilter to celebrate International Women’s Day?

How about getting together with other quilters to chat and work on quilts?

I spent most of today with a lovely group of women that form the Primarily Patchwork Group. There was a lot of talk and laughter, with lovely stories of family and travel. There was even some work done on quilts or other projects. The variety of work that appears on the tables is always amazing and provides the starting point for many conversations. The women all have their own way of making their quilt tops, and in doing the quilting itself, so I’m always seeing and learning something new.

Sometimes though, you just need to sit and contemplate…

Some of the women brought in a few quilts to display which was a special treat for all, but in particular for the ‘newer’ quilters in the group. I thought it would be nice to show them to a wider audience so have included photos of them below.

Sewing and Sandwiching Night Success

A number of ladies ventured out in the rain on Wednesday to attend the Sewing and Sandwiching Night held at the Stirling Adriatic Centre. WAQA’s newly acquired table tennis table was put to the test and I’m happy to say it worked well, as I walked way with a sandwiched and pinned quilt.

The brainstorming session was the highlight of the night. Lesley Clugson and Pat Forster supplied multiple examples of their quilts that were finished with a facing instead of the traditional binding. Lesley’s diamond edge quilt and Pat’s hexie quilt were particularly impressive and illustrated different ways to achieve the same result.

Thanks to the ladies that shared their knowledge and skills on the night, I certainly learnt a lot!

Community Quilts Busy Bee

The first CQ Busy Bee of the year was held last Sunday at Alexander Park Craft House. Even though it was in the middle of the long weekend, 30 ladies came along to make it a resounding success. There were some ladies new to the group as well as others that had not been for awhile, all adding to the buzz in the room.

Backings were selected for completed quilt tops, bindings were sewn on, blocks were pieced together, sashing & borders were added to bring tops up to size, donated fabric was sorted, wadding was cut up, quilts were pinned, fabric was cut, with the CQ’s Accuquilt Go put to use and there was even some quilting of sandwiched items. Everyone found something to do, whilst chatting and catching up with friends or getting to know the new members.

We had a hand sewing area setup as there were bags of quilts for the Wooloroo Fire Quilt Drive needing WAQA labels. I was very impressed to see them all done by the end of the day. Well done ladies!!

Some lovely treats were provided for morning tea, and there was plenty of time to enjoy the show and tell after lunch. It was great to hear how many members worked in different ways on the same quilt. I was so pleased to see included in the quilts displayed was one where last year I had selected a bunch of blocks out of the UFOs and added the sashing and border, then left it for a more talented quilter to quilt.

The next CQ Busy Bee is on 30th May 10am – 3pm at APCH. I look forward to seeing you there. Feel free to contact me at waqacommunityquilts@gmail.com if you have any queries.

Thanks for a successful Bazaar

For those that attended Sewing Day or Sewing Night earlier in the week, and added to their stash by purchasing fabric at the Bazaar, Community Quilts wishes to say THANK YOU. The Bazaar was a great success in terms of fund raising for the purchase of wadding, and even more so in terms of the buzz in the room.

There were plenty of bargains found amongst the notions, patterns and other bits and pieces. Some ladies returned to the tables multiple times, and running out of cash was not a problem, as we had the Square on hand, so it was tap and go.

Special thanks goes to the ladies that helped in preparing for the Bazaar, Cathy G, Pauline, Prue, Gwen, Anne T, Ann E and Shirley, by selecting fabric, sorting and packaging the other items donated to Community Quilts. Thanks also to Robyn, Prue, Sandra, Nicola and Helen who helped with weighing the fabric, negotiating acceptable offers on items, and taking payment at Sewing Day/Sewing Night. I also need to extend a special thank you to the ladies that stayed to help at the end of the night with packing away all the unsold items: Cathy, Pauline, Gwen, Lesley, Shirley, Kate, Helen, Phil with apologies to anyone I missed. The Bazaar would not have been the success it was without help from all these wonderful ladies. Iris Potter CQ Convenor

Beginner’s Group Quilts

I joined the WAQA beginners’ group last year and just love the group, everyone has been so friendly and helpful as I work on improving my quilting skills.

I have been impressed by the work produced by some very new quilters as well as inspired by the quilts completed by those that have been attending for quite awhile. I’m sharing a few photos I took of the quilts displayed last Monday.

The meetings are held at Alexander Park Craft House, Clyde Rd, Menora on the first and third Monday of each month, 12pm to 3pm (except public holidays). Please contact Phil if you are interested in this group – waqacoevents@gmail.com

Community Quilts Bazaar

At this month’s Sewing Day 16th and Sewing Night 17th, Community Quilts will be holding a Bazaar with all sorts of items for sale.

There will be some beautiful quilting fabrics to choose from in all sorts of sizes, colours and prints. So if you have been looking for something to fill a gap in your stash, or want to start a new project come and see what we have.

For those that really ‘do not need, nor want, shouldn’t buy’ any more fabric, then instead look through the wool, thread, templates, patterns, notions and other craft items as there is plenty of other items to attract your interest.

If your bookshelf is looking a little empty, then you will definitely want to check out the many books and magazines that will also be for sale.

So, come along to Sewing Day (10am-3pm) or Sewing Night (7pm-9:45pm) and check out the Community Quilts Bazaar, with all proceeds going to purchase wadding and backing fabric to make up more quilts to donate to the community.
