CQ Melbourne Cup Day

Flemington had nothing on Palmyra on Tuesday, November 5th, 2013. WAQA quilters had their machines flying, producing nine tops, some with backing and bindings ready.photo1The day was not without dramas as one machine had to be retired prior to the start but luckily the sewer and assistant could find an alternative working thoroughbred. The winners completed the race with only 3″ of thread remaining in the bobbin and a stewards enquiry was needed to settle some technical details in the final placings.

22The sweep for the Melbourne Cup was determined by numbered ginger’bred’ horses ably produced and trained by Janice Ianello.

The day started with scones, Jam and cream followed by a yummy lunch and glass of bubbly whilst listening to the race and finally finished with afternoon tea.

photo-2Thanks to Moya, the hall hire was deferred and all entry fees will go directly to the purchase of wadding.

photo-3A big thank you to Lesley Warren for instigating and leading the day. Thanks too, go to the 20 ladies who came and made it a day to remember…. perhaps not as the race that stopped the nation but rather the day that started a new WAQA tradition!
