Strippy Quilts at Beginners

Last week at the Beginners Group, a number of the ‘newer’ members of the group showed off their strippy quilts. Making a strippy quilt is where most newcomers to the Beginners Group get started under Phil’s guidance. The quilters make a strip of a particular “block”, such as flying geese. Each strip is of a different length and individuals can make then longer or shorter as fabric or interest levels determine.

Then when a quilter has completed all the different strips of ‘blocks’, the strips are put together in whichever way the quilter wants. To make the quilt a rectangle or a square, some quilters add more strips, others add sashing, whilst others add various pieces of background fabric. As each quilter chooses their own fabric, and their own arrangement of strips, the end results are such different quilts.

With Phil helping to hold the quilts up, there is no doubt that these quilts are versions of her ‘Strippy Quilt’. Anyone who has made one of these quilts or been to Beginners will also recognize Vera’s wall hanging below as one of Phil’s Strippy Quilts.
